The long-anticipated final installment in the Harry Potter film series premiered this weekend and broke the record for most midnight showing tickets sold, grossing over $43 million so far. The Harry Potter series of books has sold about 450 million copies and been translated into 67 different languages.
In the last chapter of this epic tale, teen wizard Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermione, continue their mission to find and destroy the Dark Lord’s (Voldemort’s) Horcruxes (magical objects that give him immortality).
The end of the series is bittersweet for Potter fans, many of whom have grown up reading the books and watching the films. Though the Potter franchise is native to Britain, its influence has permeated many aspects of American culture. Words unique to the series, like “muggle” (non-wizard) have made their way into the common vernacular; quidditch, the fictional sport that wizards play, has been adapted as a real sport at college campuses across the United States; and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a new theme park, opened in June of 2010 at Universal Studios in Florida.
